Runyon Canyon Park: Home of 130 acres of land in Hollywood AND home of free yoga classes on the grass field. If you have little or no yoga experience like me, these sessions are a great start to learn and perfect basic poses like ‘Downward Facing Dog,’ Triangle Pose, and Warrior 1 (just to name a few). Do these names sound foreign to you? If so, take a trip to Runyon Canyon Park and see what they’re all about. If not, come show off your mastery of yoga in this hour-long lesson.
Trial and error became my best friend during those 60 minutes. For someone who was just getting used to the ways of yoga, I was relieved when the teacher walked around and corrected my positions. I was constantly reminded: "Don't forget to breathe!" (as keeping a steady breath is crucial in your road to becoming a yoga star). This class was the perfect balance of staying in my comfort zone and challenging myself to polish up my poses.
Here’s a confession: I didn’t think that many people would show up to the 6 p.m. class I attended. Was I proved wrong or what? It was the ideal sized class with about 25-30 people, and it was very motivating for me to see so many people trying out the different poses… I am secretly determined to learn how to do a headstand now.
- Early Birds: Take advantage of the morning classes.
- Not a morning person? No biggie. Take a break from work and join the nature lovers of Hollywood for the afternoon classes.
- Yoga in the Evening: Evening classes are also offered just when the sun is about to set.
Oh, and a few tips- bring a LARGE towel or mat, come a few minutes early to find parking, and enter through the Fuller Avenue entrance.
